How do i tell my friend?

how do i tell my friend about a turkey he gave me for free he had it for a while like 6 months its fully cooked and smoked but it said on a card that not to thaw out in room temp but my dad did i told him today i ate some of it but i did`nt i we trew it out since thawing it out at room temp supposedly makes it not safe to eat it was fully cooked it just had to be heated up in an oven how do i tell him the truth that i didnt eat it without hurting his feelings without making him mad at me
