Why traits that disappear in the F1 generation reappear in the F2 generation?

The F1 generation might be heterozygous for the trait and the recessive gene is inherited to the next generation. If the F1 mates with the heterozygous individual, the recessive trait will reappear as their progeny will have two copies of the genes.
